There is actually legitimately a little bit of CGI in Star Wars. The Death Star plans and the gunnery screens. That was state of the art.

The first real photorealistic CGI in a commercial film was in Star Trek II for the Genesis Planet sequence.

That computer based part of ILM was eventually spun out into another company called Pixar... I hear they ended up doing okay.
