It was indeed never a country.
It was an ottoman territory. Arabs owned some of it, Jews owned some of it.
Arabs claimed dominion over all of it and started a war to try and make that true, but they lost.
Despite losing multiple subsequent wars they started, they still feel entitled to dictate terms.
They have more in common with modern day descendants of the confederates than they do actual freedom fighters.
